Meeting Summary:

The team discussed version control management and the need to begin version releases, though they identified several outdated and open PRs that require attention and resolution. Technical discussions focused on API method support for pre-merge blocks and a feature request for testing build block V1 RPC methods, with Chase and Tullio agreeing to follow up on these items. The conversation ended with guidance provided to Chanderprakash on how to contribute to Ethereum development, including reviewing PRs, writing tests, and participating in relevant Discord channels.

The team discussed versioning information and the need to start doing version releases, though there are many outdated and open PRs that need to be cleaned up. Chase noted that some PRs require resolution of conflicts or need to be closed, while others from 2023 seem abandoned. The team agreed to begin version releases soon, but no specific decisions were made about which PRs to address first.

The team discussed API method support for pre-merge blocks, with Tullio and Chase agreeing that while these methods are technically valid, they may not be practically useful since nodes don’t need to save uncle blocks and the methods are non-deterministic. Chase mentioned that while a PR appears good as a wrapper for the main method, he lacks approval rights to act on it, and several older PRs need attention. The team also discussed a draft PR from Pandas requesting a testing build block V1 RPC method, which Chase needs Marius to review before it can be merged into Geth.

Chase and Tullio discussed a support feature that would make it easier for pandas to test different forks and building special blocks. Tullio agreed to take a closer look at the feature. They also mentioned the need for a maintainer to rerun something, but the details were unclear. The conversation ended with Chase and Tullio planning to chat further in Discord.

Chanderprakash expressed interest in contributing to Ethereum development and was guided by Chase on how to help. Chase suggested focusing on reviewing PRs, writing tests for the debug namespace, standardizing tracing and debug set head methods across clients, and participating in the ETH R&D Discord JSON RPC channel. Chanderprakash agreed to prioritize these tasks and contribute meaningfully.

Next Steps:

  • Chase: Get Marius to review the PR for the testing Build block V1 RPC method
  • Tullio: Take a closer look at supporting the Build block V1 RPC method in Erigon
  • Chase: Add tests to the TX pool standardization PR
  • Boma: Finalize what version 1 is going to look like (to be discussed at next meeting)
  • Chanderprakash: Review open PRs and provide comments, feedback, or reviews
  • Chanderprakash: Look into standardizing the debug set head method across clients
  • Chanderprakash: Help write tests for the debug namespace
  • Maintainer: Rerun the PR that needs maintainer action
  • Chase and Tullio: Chat in private about Discord message
